Earlier reported $ 620 million Egyptian Canadian project to produce methanol seems well progressing towards implementation phase. According to Egypt Minister of Petroleum & Mineral Wealth, Eng. Sameh Fahmy, the project will be executed at Mubarak Complex for Natural Gas & Petrochemicals in Damietta to dispose on an annual design capacity of 1.3 million tons. Project owner is a joint venture 60 % owned by Methanex Co. of Canada, 24 % owned by the Petrochemicals Holding Co. (of the Petroleum Sector) & the remaining 16 % owned by private sector. The project, to depend on available natural gas supplies, would occupy 700,000 M2 land & an option to build an offshore dock. It is scheduled to start production by 2009. Methanol is an important feed stock for a wide variety of industries producing formaldehyde, acetic acid, melamine & special additives to improve the quality of benzene. |
